Poor luck with hitting led to two losses for the Southwest Baptist baseball team Tuesday, March 6 against Rockhurst University in Kansas City.
The Bearcats had no problem making contact, only striking out seven times in the two games. However, everything they hit seemed to be right at somebody. SBU had only nine hits and five runs in the two games combined leading to 8-3 and 5-2 losses.
Junior outfielder Josh Baggett was the lone hitting star for the Bearcats. Baggett went two-for-six in the double header with a double and his first home run of the season. He also picked up two runs batted in to increase his season total to eight, which leads the team heading into their weekend series verses Augustana College Friday and Saturday, March 9-10.
Injured catcher senior Skyler Powers, who may return to play against Augustana, believes SBU's 3-8 start can be overcome.
"Definitely," said Powers. "We've have got the guys and the potential. The biggest thing is unity and whether or not the team and the coaches can come together. But we've definitely got the talent."
Junior pitcher Zane Montgomery (1-2) and sophomore pitcher Ray Kelly (0-1) each picked up a loss in their respective starts. Montgomery struck out seven batters to increase his season total to 28. Kelly's 2.70 earned run average in 16 and two-thirds innings leads the team.
Both of SBU's double headers verses Augustana are scheduled to start at noon pending inclement weather.
The Bearcats will begin MIAA conference play next Friday, March 16, against Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville.
