Washburn women end SBU's season

The Lady 'Cats came out strong in the first half, grabbing an early lead. Then the Lady Blues tied the game at 13 with 11:42 left in the first half. After the Lady Blues took the lead, they extended it to six going into halftime.
Due to solid defense, the Lady Blues only managed to shoot 11-24 (33 percent) from the field and 1-12 (eight percent) from behind the 3 point line. in the first half SBU shot 9 of 27 (33 percent) from the field, and from behind the 3-point line they shot 2 of 5 (40 percent).
In the second half, Washburn came out and picked up the tempo.
"The first half we were able to get the ball in the post, but in the second half they were able to get their running game working." senior Livia Brito. "It was difficult to get the rebounds."
The first and second half were polar opposites; SBU was unable to find a rhythm in the second half.
"We felt pretty good at half time, didn't feel good after that." Head Coach Jim Middleton said. "Washburn caught fire and were able to get going."
The Lady 'Cats were able to cut the deficit to five in the first 30 seconds of the second half, but then the Lady Blues would go on a 12-0 run to put the score at 42-25.
For the remainder of the game, the Bearcats would not get closer than 15 points. Washburn then went on a 21 to 6 run to stretch the lead to 30 points.
The Lady Blues improved their shooting in the second half, as evidenced by their 58 percent shooting in the second half.
Leading the scoring attack for Washburn was junior Corkey Stiger, who put up 19 off the bench.
The scoring for SBU was led by Brito who grabbed six rebounds in addition to her 15 points in her final game for SBU; also adding 15 points was sophomore guard Courtney Shewmaker.
"I am proud of our girls this year," said Middleton. "We are a team of the future; it's not our turn yet, but our day is coming."
The Lady 'Cats end the season seventh in the MIAA standings with a record of 15-13 overall and 7-11 in the MIAA.
