I have been here for five years, and nearly every semester someone complains about SGA not getting things done. This may or may not be true.
What is most certainly true, though, is that in order for SGA to do all the extravagant and amazing things students expect them to do, they need manpower!
Would you expect 20 people to build a skyscraper in a month? No! You would hire dozens of people to get that sort of job done.
SGA's work load is sky high, which is why you should consider running for an office.
Positions are available for class officers and for the organization's executive cabinet.
If you would like to run for a class office, the deadline to submit a petition is Monday, April 16, and the election will be held Wednesday, April 18. To run, you must get 50 signatures from members of your class.
If you have more lofty goals for yourself, I suggest you run for a cabinet position. The elected positions are ppresident, vice president, secretary and Treasurer. Fill out a petition with 50 signatures and turn it in by Monday, April 9 for the April 11 election.
Every semester, SGA has struggled to fills its positions and rarely has a full, working organization. Without all of these positions filled, members are forced to work double, or even triple, time to accomplish basic duties.
Clearly, if the organization is struggling to meet its own basic needs, it isn't going to be able to put on a vast array of other activities or perform other governmental actions.
Also, every semester, people complain that SGA is not meeting student needs. Well, I wonder why?
Full blame can not really be placed on the people who are already in office. And, if you want to get technical, no blame can be placed on people who are in office if nobody ran against them!
We are in a tough position here, students. Some of us, myself included, would not make wonderful authority figures. Personally, I know not many would be a fan of me because I am very hard-nosed and I stick to the laws. I would be more of a dictator. So, if you're like me, please don't run.
There are others out there, though. People who will strive to do what needs to be done and be nice about it. People who have a heart for serving other people. These are the people who need to run.
Give the students a choice, for once!
