When the house was finished Friday, it was blue with white trim. The woman told In His Steps that she was no longer ashamed to sit on her front porch.
In the afternoons, the students volunteered at an after school program for at-risk children. The program is in its infancy and targets children at risk for emotional and physical abuse and vulnerable to a gang lifestyle.
The program provides a place to get help with homework, learn about God and how to fight peer pressure. As of now there are 16 kids in the program between 4th and 6th grade.
The SBU students were there to help the kids with homework and serve as a positive example for the kids. Each team member paired off with a child and got to know that child throughout the whole week.
The team also taught the children about the armor of God from Ephesians 6, using skits that were relevant to the kids' daily lives.
The third team went to Garca, Brazil and also worked with children. In Brazil, a team of 27 SBU students lived and worked in the Alpha Omega Children's Home, a home for children who have been removed from abusive or negligent homes.
The team's main focus was to hang out and love on the children of the orphanage. The students played soccer and basketball and helped the kids with their chores.
The students also performed music and drama at the local church and built what the team calls a "merry-throw-round" for the orphanage.
"I really loved the culture of Brazil and fell in love with the kids," said senior Erin Phelps. "I also enjoyed learning Portuguese phrases like 'vaitroxa' and 'chifruda'."
SBU was well represented this spring break, in the United States as well as abroad. Lives were changed on both sides of the ministries.
