SGA plans activities, new officer elections

The Southwest Baptist University Student Government Association is planning activities and elections to rid students of spring fever. At 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 10 in Goodson Student Union, SGA will host a 1 vs. 100 style game show with student and faculty participants.

SBU to develop agreement with Tomsk State in Russia

Southwest Baptist University is seeking to develop its new working agreement with Tomsk State, a Russian university. SBU President Dr. C. Pat Taylor has asked Dr. Bob Klostermeyer, assistant professor of political science and chair of SBU's Department of History and Political Science, to serve as the University's agreement coordinator.

Future students to tour campus during Fast Forward Visit Day

High school juniors and their parents will experience college life for a day at Southwest Baptist's Fast Forward Visit Day Monday, April 9. According to Darren Crowder, director of admissions, the day is an annual event designed to acquaint future college students and their parents with SBU and what the University has to offer.

Off-campus housing

Students wishing to apply for off-campus housing must do so by Monday, April 2. According to Housing Coordinator Chris Keller, the deadline for off-campus applications is 5 p.m. Monday, April 2. "Applications received after April 2 will not be accepted if the applying student does not meet the University's off-campus eligibility requirements," said Keller.

Students crochet for premature babies

Skeins of blue and pink yarn quietly transform into tiny hats and booties for infants across southwest Missouri. A group of women from Butterfield Residential Care Center in Bolivar spend several hours each Friday in a "crocheting circle" as they make baby clothes for Madison Angels (MA).

SIFE to compete in regionals for advancement to nationals

Southwest Baptist's Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) will compete for cash prizes and a position in the SIFE USA National Exposition when they travel to Rogers, Ark. for the March 30 SIFE USA Regional Competition. The Rogers USA Regional is one of 17 SIFE competitions being held across the United States in March and April.

Chamber Orchestra concert set for April 3

A free concert featuring the Southwest Baptist Chamber Orchestra will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 3 at Meyer Recital Hall in Casebolt Music Center. According to conductor Dr. Brian Hopwood, assistant professor and director of Instrumental Studies, an eclectic mix of traditional and modern works will be included in the concert program.

Mellers retrieves stolen silverware

The stolen Mellers Dining Commons' silverware re-appeared in the Physical Plant parking lot Saturday, March 10. "It was just a box full of loose silverware," said Food Services Director Dennis Owens. "There was no note, but we think it's all there." The Mellers staff discovered the silverware was missing early Tuesday morning, March 6.

ACI recognizes two art students

Two Southwest Baptist commercial art majors received "Awards of Excellence" for their graphic designs in the American Corporate Identity (ACI) contest, an annual competition designed to recognize excellence in students and excellence in instruction for college-level visual art and graphic design teachers.

COBACS presents first Psalm 15 award

Kelly Baker, executive vice president for sales at Teters Floral Products Company in Bolivar, was named the first recipient of the Psalm 15 Leadership Award. The award was presented to Baker by Southwest Baptist University's College of Business and Computer Science (COBACS) during the annual COBACS Psalm 15 lecture held March 8.

Students place at annual psychology convention

Two Southwest Baptist students earned second place finishes for their research presentation at the 27th annual Great Plains Students Psychology Convention, hosted March 16-17 at Friends University in Wichita, Kansas. Seniors Ashley Butler and Adina Butler were awarded second place in their session for their research presentation titled "The relationship of religious fundamentalism and right-wing authoritarianism to political, social and religious issues.

SBU awards honorary doctorates in Chapel

Southwest Baptist University honored two outstanding individuals with honorary doctorates at the annual Founders' Day Chapel service Wednesday, March 14. Dr. Bob Derryberry, senior professor of communication arts, presented the address. Norma Bishop, part-time SBU staff member, was the recipient of an honorary doctorate in education.

RIAA investigates students

The trend for acquiring music in college is to get it for as little cost as possible; however, the cost may be more for illegal music downloaders than if the college students acquired music legally. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has begun investigating and filing lawsuits against individuals at universities who use file-sharing software.

SBU Spirit Squad

The Southwest Baptist University Spirit Squad became national champions of their division March 11 at the Cheerleaders of America (COA) Cheer and Dance Mid America Open National Competition at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City. Entrance into the national competition was open to any college or university for a small fee.

Forensics awarded national championship

The Southwest Baptist University forensics team returned to campus with yet another honor to add to the impressive list of achievements awarded to their group. The team was named champion of the 45th National Pi Kappa Delta Tournament, held March 7-10 at Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, Mich.
