A free concert featuring the Southwest Baptist Chamber Orchestra will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 3 at Meyer Recital Hall in Casebolt Music Center.
According to conductor Dr. Brian Hopwood, assistant professor and director of Instrumental Studies, an eclectic mix of traditional and modern works will be included in the concert program. Norman Leyden's four-movement Serenade for Strings (1971) will be performed alongside Percy Fletcher's vintage Folk Tune and Fiddle Dance (1914).
Also included is the incidental music "Farandole" from L'Arlésienne Suite No. 2 by Georges Bizet - an arrangement of the famous Provençal tune that Bizet used to accompany the play, "The Girl from Arles."
William Hofeldt's "Brahms-like" Lullaby and Jay Ungar's Ashokan Farewell - referred to by Ken Burns as "the quintessentially American lament" - will round out the program for strings.
The highlight of the evening will be the performance of senior cellists Chie Komamiya, Megan Ross and Alyson Browning on David Popper's Requiem, Op. 66 for three cellos and piano.
The concert will conclude with two selections for full orchestra: "La Buona Figliuola (The Good Daughter) Overture" by Niccolò Piccini and "Russian Sailors' Dance" from The Red Poppy by Reinhold Glière.
