Dr. Bob Derryberry, director of forensics, stressed the point that there was no single person responsible for the overall success of the team.
"I must emphasize that every speaker on our team contributed to the overall sweepstakes finish," said Derryberry. "Students worked through the final hours of preparation with unusual dedication, and only their commitment allowed us to take our slate of entries."
The success of the forensics team is a direct reflection of the level of coaching they have received throughout the year. However, Derryberry refuses to take all of the credit for this.
"I am also grateful to Dr. Compton for hours of encouragement, coaching and support," said Derryberry. "Mr. Bryan Fisher, SBU [alumnus] and Ozarks Technical College teacher, gave many hours to the Southwest program in guest coaching and helping our program meet its requirements for judging commitments."
Competitors at Pi Kappa Delta are awarded with good, excellent and superior ratings. If contestants in a given event finish in the top 10 percent of a category, they are awarded superior awards, and if they finish in the next 20 percent of their group, they are awarded an excellent rating.
Receiving a superior rating were Van Bebber, communication analysis; Blankenship, dramatic interpretation; Erickson, legislative debate; Koe, prose and radio broadcasting; Eslit, prose, and the duo presentations of Erickson / Klousia and Eslit / Melton.
Winning a national competition of this magnitude is undoubtedly a personal, academic and professional accomplishment. Eslit's description of the moment the team was announced national champion sums up the attitude of the rest of her teammates.
"The moment our school's name was called for the national sweepstakes, the moment became unforgettable," said Eslit. "I believe that memory will always be a part of me. I will never forget looking around at my coaches and teammates faces. All were filled with pure joy."
