The stolen Mellers Dining Commons' silverware re-appeared in the Physical Plant parking lot Saturday, March 10.
"It was just a box full of loose silverware," said Food Services Director Dennis Owens. "There was no note, but we think it's all there."
The Mellers staff discovered the silverware was missing early Tuesday morning, March 6. Flyers on cars in the parking lot outside of the cafeteria advertised Mellers silverware for sale. The break-in was originally written off as a prank.
When the silverware was not returned by lunchtime, Owens drove to Springfield and bought $400 worth of new silverware to replace what had been stolen.
Now that the silverware has been returned, Owens has dropped the idea of pressing charges to investigate the identities of the pranksters and seek restitution.
With the silverware returned, Mellers now has a surplus. The new silverware will be cycled through to keep up with the natural loss of damaged silverware over the year.
"We won't have to buy new silverware for a while," said Owens.

I commend Mellers' staff for the way they handled this situation allowing the prankster to return the silverware with little noteriety, though there is little doubt as to the culprit. (Continued…)
