Skeins of blue and pink yarn quietly transform into tiny hats and booties for infants across southwest Missouri. A group of women from Butterfield Residential Care Center in Bolivar spend several hours each Friday in a "crocheting circle" as they make baby clothes for Madison Angels (MA).
Bolivar resident Arletta Jones began MA in February 2002 as a way to give back to the families of children in need and premature babies.
"I called it Madison Angels to commemorate the passing of my granddaughter, Madison," Jones said.
MA is a chapter of the national organization Newborns In Need, Inc. (NIN) which began in 1992 as a charity to help clothe sick and needy babies and their families. Since its inception, MA has grown to more than 600 volunteers in southwest Missouri.
Recently, a group of students from Southwest Baptist began attending the Friday meetings to help the residents crochet.
"It gives us something else to do with our Friday afternoon," says Butterfield resident Jean Akin, "and we love teaching the SBU kids how to crochet."
MA's work has not gone unnoticed. In May, MA is scheduled to host NIN's annual national conference at Citizens Memorial Hospital in Bolivar.
