Southwest Baptist used three home runs in game two to split a double header with Missouri Southern Tuesday, March 27. Home runs from sophomore Jason Asher, his first, junior Chris Martinez, his fourth, and senior Skyler Powers, his third, led to a rain-shortened 9-6 win over the Lions.
With a victory in their MIAA and home openers, injuries and a change in their starting lineup, the Southwest Baptist women's tennis team continued their push for the program's first ever berth in the NCAA Division II National Tournament. With a fifth place ranking in the North Central Region, the Lady Bearcats are in position qualify for that tournament berth.
National and regional rankings are nothing new for John Bryant, head coach of Southwest Baptist University's men's tennis team. In his 41-year coaching career, Bryant has produced 35 nationally-ranked teams which now include the 2007 SBU Bearcats. In the NCAA Division II Top 40 Poll released by Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) March 12, SBU was ranked 34th in the nation, the 'Cats first appearance in the national rankings this season.
With the softball season in full swing, the Southwest Baptist softball team continues to press on and improve their confidence as a team. At the start of the year, the team's confidence was up and down. "We started the season playing pretty unsure of ourselves; it was difficult for us as a team to find our groove," said Head Coach Christy Capner.
March 10-11 at the Battle-of-the-Creek Invitational, the season-opening meet for the Southwest Baptist golf team, youth was served. Freshmen Brad Nipper and Justin Sellin carded SBU's top individual scores as they led the Bearcats to a ninth place finish at the Branson Creek Golf Club in Hollister, an 18-hole par-71 course.
