Lady Bearcat tennis team regionally ranked

Issue date: 3/30/07 Section: Sports
With a victory in their MIAA and home openers, injuries and a change in their starting lineup, the Southwest Baptist women's tennis team continued their push for the program's first ever berth in the NCAA Division II National Tournament. With a fifth place ranking in the North Central Region, the Lady Bearcats are in position qualify for that tournament berth. Head Coach John Bryant says the key to SBU's season is mental toughness and good health.
"We need to continue to develop that mental toughness that successful players must have in collegiate tennis," said Bryant. "Our number seven and eight players have had to step up due to injuries and have bought us some time to get some of our other players healthy."
In a March 10 doubleheader at Fort Hayes, Kan., the Lady 'Cats racked up two wins, pounding MIAA rival Fort Hayes State 7-2 before blanking Metropolitan State 9-0.
Against Fort Hayes, SBU took two of three doubles and five of six singles matches. In singles, freshman Jolee Cook garnered a 6-1, 6-3 win. Janzen (7-5, 6-0) picked a win at number two with freshman Johanna Olsson (6-1, 6-3) and Wolfgramm (6-0, 6-2), getting victories at the third and fourth singles flights, respectively. Sophomore Trish Moceo (6-3, 6-2) won at number six with junior Lauren Hodson (6-3, 6-3) absorbing SBU's lone loss in flight five.
In doubles, Olsson / Janzen (8-6) and Wolfgramm / Cook (8-5) claimed wins with Hodson / Moceo (8-6) suffering the only loss. With the win, SBU's record improved to 4-2 on the season and 1-0 in MIAA play.
The Lady 'Cats were never threatened in their meet with Metropolitan as Cook (6-2, 6-0), Janzen (6-2, 6-2), Olsson (6-2, 6-1), Wolfgramm (6-1, 6-1) and junior Stephanie Janzekovich (6-2, 6-3) all captured singles victories. Olsson / Janzen (6-2, 6-2), Wolfgramm / Cook (8-6) and Hodson / Moceo (8-1) all won in doubles.
Returning to Bolivar for their March 14 home opener, the Lady 'Cats made short work of undermanned Johnson County Community College. Cook (7-5, 6-3), Janzen (6-1, 6-1), Olsson (6-3, 6-3), Moceo (6-2, 6-3) and junior Melanie Farris (6-0, 6-0) all won in singles with Olsson / Janzen (8-4) and Wolfgramm / Cook (8-1) notching doubles victories in SBU's second straight 9-0 win.
