SBU starts the MIAA season with a record of 5-16.
"Our record does not reflect the effort that has been happening on the field," said Capner.
The softball program has had a tough history, but has shown improvements in the past few years.
SBU softball has yet to have a winning record during the history of the program.
"Hopefully we can continue to keep the killer mindset of being able to hold a lead and finish the games," said Capner.
"We haven't been able to finish games, and when we have had a lead, it is hard to consistently overcome."
With a tough competitive MIAA schedule to look forward to, the team's collective mindset and confidence will make all the difference in improving the conference record from last year.
SBU's first home game will be against nationally-ranked #6 Emporia State April 3.
"I feel that we are able to compete in the conference and can put together a solid game against the Hornets," said Capner.
"The girls have done a great job buying into our mission and making the season happen, continuing to improve their efforts as a team," said Capner.
"We have a mentality this year that we have unfinished business to accomplish and this team can be a winner."
