With the softball season in full swing, the Southwest Baptist softball team continues to press on and improve their confidence as a team. At the start of the year, the team's confidence was up and down.
"We started the season playing pretty unsure of ourselves; it was difficult for us as a team to find our groove," said Head Coach Christy Capner.
The first two tournaments of the season had been canceled due to rain, making it difficult for the team to get into season mode.
The team started out the season with a win over Oklahoma Baptist at the Early Bird Tournament.
The Bearcats played a lot of tough games in several tournaments, traveling all over Missouri including to Springfield, St. Louis, Joplin and Nebraska.
"The last couple tournaments we have been taking on better competition than we started the season playing; this has helped us raise our level of play," said Capner.
Just before spring break, the Lady 'Cats took part in the Pittsburg State Tournament in Kansas.
Staying close in the tournament games has been frustrating; it has been good in the sense that SBU is able to play with the competition, but the team still has not figured out how to win those close games.
On the bright side, the Bearcats' offense has been able to produce quite a few runs. Unfortunately, the opposing teams have been able to climb back into games due to the inability to close our games with a lead.
"Finishing games are an area that we still need to improve as the season continues," said Coach Capner.
In the last game, the Lady 'Cats took on the Oklahoma Baptist Lady Bison.
Down 9-2 and going into the bottom of the 6th inning, SBU rallied to score six runs with the help of senior Tara Phillips, who hit a three-run home run.
Despite their efforts, the Lady 'Cats were unable to close the gap completely and fell to OBU 9-8.
"Knowing that we can fight like that 'til the end of the game is huge, and a testament to how much the confidence level of the team is going up," said Capner.
