The Student Government Assoication at Southwest Baptist University is never short of ways to entertain the SBU student body. One of the new activities SGA introduced during the spring 2007 semester is 1 vs. 100, a version of the popular game show viewed on NBC.
The SBU version of this game included a 15-person mob instead of the usual 100, which was made of several SGA cabinet members and officers as well as students picked from the audience. The mob members and the contestants were chosen by tickets drawn out of a bucket.
Each member of the mob was given three pieces of paper, an "A", a "B" and a "C," with which they chose their answers. Each contestant had 10 questions, the first three were easy, the next four were medium and the last three were classified as hard.
When a question was asked by master of ceremonies sophomore Jared Kathcart, the mob would then select an answer. The contestant could either answer the question on their own merit or choose from three mob inclusive options.
"Trust the mob" entailed the contestant having to use the most frequent mob answer as their own. "Pool the mob" simply allowed the contestant to see what the mobs most frequent answer was and still choose their own final answer. "Ask the mob" allowed the contestant to ask two mob members, one with the correct answer and one without, why they selected their particular answer. If a mob member selected the wrong answer, they were eliminated from the game, and if all mob members were eliminated, the contestant automatically won all the prizes.
At any time of the game a contestant could walk away with the prizes already won. As soon as a question was answered incorrectly, a contestant had to walk away with nothing. Many contestants played and walked away without any prizes, but freshman Lisa Warren was able to beat the mob, answering all 10 questions correctly.
The questions pertained to current events and SBU general knowledge. The prizes for the easy level included a free small blizzard from Dairy Queen, a free Sonic burger or a free Sonic Cherry Limeade and a Movie Gallery coupon. The prize for the medium level was a $20 gift certificate to Wal-Mart. For the hardest level alongside the last two prizes, the contestant won a $30 gift certificate.
The night, hosted by Senior Jarred Kingston, was full of fun and laughs as different contestants were called up and the Mob showed off their knowledge.
