The event was led by juniors Liz Hood and Chris Dutschman. Bingo started at 8:30 p.m. and lasted until all the groceries had been claimed by bingo winners. The event had a very large turnout with students in attendance from all the dorms, on-campus apartments and off-campus students.
The Union quickly filled with bingo players. Games were played for straight across bingo, four corners, outside square, inside square, X, cross and blackout.
Each game was played for anywhere between the first three bingos to the first 10 bingos, and each strategy was played multiple times.
Each different type of bingo allowed for different sizes of prizes. The more simple bingos, such as straight across and four corners, only provided for one prize. The squares, X games and crosses allowed for students to collect two prizes or a larger combination prize. There was more than $200 in groceries as well as some groceries donated by Administrative Assistant to the Dean Julia Orell and Director of Student Life Zach Waters.
The groceries included both food items and household goods. There was a large Freschetta pizza, as well as sundae mixings for the big winners that stayed until the end and played for a blackout. Other prizes included Tide, toothpaste, Pringles, sweet tea, soda, cereal, toiletries and much more.
Also, door prizes were drawn in between the games, and students were able to win sandwiches from Subway and personal pan pizzas. Students could play as long as they wanted, and there was no limit on number of wins.
Sophomore Tia Payne had a very lucky card. Payne won bingo four times as well as winning a door prize.
Free groceries got the attention of college students. At the end of the night, many winners walked away with smiles.
