University to offer Interdisciplinary Studies major

Ian Paterson

Issue date: 4/13/07 Section: News
If the IDS coordinator decides the student is unable to continue with the program, the student will still be able to pursue a minor in Interdisciplinary Studies.
To be approved for the IDS program, a student must have a meeting with his / her faculty advisor.
If the student meets the academic criteria for the IDS program, the faculty advisor will then refer the student to the IDS coordinator. After meeting with the IDS coordinator to discuss the feasibility of such a degree, the student must complete an application form and curriculum plan, which will outline the proposed courses of study and a semester-by-semester rationale for combining the courses.
In the rationale, the student will justify why his / her current major does not satisfy their personal career goals.
The curriculum plan must also explain the assessment of the student.
The assessment can include a portfolio, internship, major field test or a combination of the three.
The approved, typewritten curriculum and plan of assessment will then be sent to the dean's council and the dean of the college with the highest number of courses in the proposal. The dean's council must approve all IDS majors.
Once approved by the dean's council, the IDS coordinator will be assigned as the student's primary advisor. An advisor in the department of the major emphasis of the student's course of study will be assigned as the student's secondary advisor.
Although there is an extensive approval process required for an IDS degree, the student with those lofty dreams and ambitions will be grateful for the SBU administration's decision to initiate the IDS program.
"I don't want to call it 'choose-your-own-major,'" said Bayer. "It's tailoring a major to fit your career goals or graduate school goals."
