University to offer Interdisciplinary Studies major

Issue date: 4/13/07 Section: News
As a liberal arts institution, Southwest Baptist University strives to provide students with the widest variety of degrees and classes available. It is impossible for any institution to meet the dreams and aspirations of a creatively energetic generation with applicable majors for every dream and aspiration. However, colleges and universities across the nation are making strides to bring students one step closer to the degree of their dreams.
Starting in the fall 2007 semester, SBU will initiate an Interdisciplinary Studies (IDS) major. The degree is designed to allow exceptional students to create their own course of study if and when their academic or career goals do not fit into any existing major.
The IDS program was born out of a desire to enrich students' educational experience, maximize their curricular options, correlate University disciplines and broaden their career aspirations.
"I'm really excited about this program," said Sherrie Bayer, instructor of University Success Center and Interdisciplinary Studies coordinator. "It is for students who are higher achievers, but have career goals or they have graduate school goals, but their major is not here at SBU."
The program will require a minimum of 60 hours of course study in addition to a minimum of two to four areas of study. At least 30 of the required 60 hours must be upper level (3000-4000) courses. No more than 50 percent of the courses may be from any one academic department.
A minor in Interdisciplinary Studies is only available for approved IDS major candidates who change their major, are unable to complete the major or do not meet the major's requirements.
Double majors including a major in Interdisciplinary Studies are not available.
The criteria students interested in applying for the IDS major include 32 credit hours and a minimum ACT score of 24 (with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0) or 21 (with a cumulative grade point average of 3.3).
Continued enrollment in the program requires a maintained grade point average of 3.0. Students who slip under the 3.0 mark will be placed on academic probation.
