Golf 'Cats garner top-10 ranking

Issue date: 4/13/07 Section: Sports
Carding the best scores of his collegiate career, Southwest Baptist freshman Brad Nipper came out a winner, capturing individual medalist honors at the Central Region Invitational in Kansas City April 9-10.
Playing on the rain-soaked par-72 course at Swope Memorial Golf Club, Nipper carded a 67 (the meet's top individual score) on day one. Fighting through a steady rain on day two, Nipper still managed to come within four strokes of his first-day best score, shooting a 71 for a 138 total. Central Missouri's Justin Yoder (139) took second place honors, finishing a full stroke behind Nipper in a 69-player field that featured 13 five-man teams.
"I wasn't playing as well as I had hoped to in our last meets," said Nipper. "Since I had played the [Swope Memorial] course before, my goal was to make lots of pars. I wound up making several pars and birdies and was really pleased with how things went."
Other players contributing to the SBU effort were freshman Justin Sellin (151), sophomore Matt Hefley (154) and juniors Clay Brandenburgh (159) and Jared Lotz (161).
As a team, SBU shot 292 and 307 to finish with a 599 two-day total, good for eighth place in the overall standings. The University of Missouri-Kansas City took the team title (570).
At the Missouri Southern State Invitational in Joplin, an official MIAA-sanctioned meet played April 2-3, SBU placed ninth out of 10 teams. Playing on a par-71 course at Loma Linda Country Club, the Bearcats finished the first day with a 329, tying Pittsburg State (329) for ninth place. Sellin (76) carded the 'Cats best individual score followed by Brandenburgh (84), junior Garrett Smith (84), Nipper (85) and junior Adam Lotz (90).
On day two, SBU finished strong, coming in with a 309, taking 20 strokes off their first-day score. The 'Cats finished the meet with a two-day 638 and a ninth place finish. Washburn (596) captured first place followed by Missouri Southern (602), Central Missouri (619), Missouri Western State and Winona State (623), Truman State (624), Fort Hays State (634) and Pittsburg (653). With their ninth place showing, SBU fell from fifth to sixth in the MIAA standings, dropping just one half of a point behind fifth place Fort Hays.
