Issue date: 4/13/07 Section: Sports
Southwest Baptist University senior track-and-field runner T. Jay Sanderson briefly had the fastest 5,000-meter time in NCAA Division II after competing at the Stanford Invitational March 30 in Palo Alto, Calif.
He placed 16th in the fourth section of the event with a clocking of 14 minutes, 26.79 seconds -- 36 seconds better than the previous SBU record and a string provisional qualifying mark for the national meet.
It was the first time as a collegian Sanderson had run a five-kilometer race on the track.
Sanderson's time was bettered the next day by Jesus Solis of Adams (Colo.) State at the Northern Colorado Tom Benich Classic (14:23.11).
