"The Hornets came to play with a very balanced attack, and they get solid hits," said Capner.
The winning pitcher in the first game was Emporia State's sophomore Megan Grisell, who pitched three innings, getting three strikeouts and improving her record to 2-0. The losing pitcher for SBU was senior Amanda Orchard who went five innings, giving up 13 runs, 11 earned, on 13 hits. Orchard struck out two batters and walked four for the game.
In the second game, the Lady 'Cats came out and scored in the first inning. They held the Lady Hornets in the first two innings to no runs until the third inning, when the bats came alive. In the final three innings, Emporia State scored five runs in each inning, winning the game 15-2. Emporia State scored all their runs with two outs.
"Errors were costly in each game for us," said Capner.
The winning pitcher in the second game was junior Samantha Sheely improved to 12-3 on the year, going five innings where she gave up four hits, and two earned runs. The losing pitcher was Mortimer who fell to 0-5. Mortimer pitched three and a third innings, giving up nine runs on seven hits.
A bright spot for SBU was in the second game when Mortimer hit two home runs in two consecutive trips to the plate. The first came in the bottom of the 1st; then in the bottom of the 4th she hit another home run to almost the same spot.
"We had a lot of solid contact; unfortunately the hits were right to the Emporia State defense," stated Capner.
With the four losses, SBU's overall record fell to 5-22 and 0-6 in MIAA.
After losing their April 11 doubleheader with Lincoln to rain, the Lady 'Cats will play Missouri Southern Friday, April 13 at 4 p.m. in Joplin.
