It was another tough week for the Southwest Baptist softball team. First, they traveled to Hays, Kan. to take on the Fort Hays State Lady Tigers. Like many of their other games this season, the Lady Bearcats hit well, but the hits always seemed to be right at a fielder. When runners were able to reach base, it was tough for the 'Cats to turn the base runners into runs on the scoreboard.
"We had a lot of opportunities to score with runners in scoring position; we just couldn't bring them in," said Head Coach Christy Capner.
In the first game, SBU was able to score three runs on five hits. The Tigers scored four runs on eight hits. The key stat in the 4-3 loss was the players left on base. The Bearcats left a total of seven runners on base compared to Fort Hays' five runners left on.
Freshman Mackenzie Mortimer pitched six innings while giving up three earned runs and eight hits.
In the second game, Fort Hays State scored six runs on 11 hits. The Lady 'Cats scored four runs on 10 hits. A huge factor in the lack of runs scored by SBU was leaving 12 base runners on base.
Taking the 6-4 loss in the second game for SBU was senior pitcher Amanda Orchard, who gave up 11 hits in six innings. All six runs were earned. Orchard struck out three Lady Tigers in the game. The winning pitcher for Fort Hays State was freshman Jessica Hamilton, who went five innings and gave up six hits, one earned run and struck out five batters.
In the later innings the Lady 'Cats did make a comeback attempt, but came up short by two runs.
"Our hitting has been struggling but has shown improvement of late," said Capner. "The team did a great job making a comeback with the late rally; we just couldn't finish with a win."
Last Tuesday, April 3, SBU had its home opener, taking on #7 Emporia State Lady Hornets. The Hornets came into the game with hot bats.
"Emporia is a great team," said Capner.
The first game's final score was 13-0 in favor of Emporia State. SBU only got one hit for the game.
