Tennis 'Cats to host unbeaten Washburn

Issue date: 4/13/07 Section: Sports
Two undefeated teams, three nationally-ranked teams, two nationally-ranked singles players and a nationally-ranked doubles team-all will be featured in the final regular season home meet of the Southwest Baptist men's and women's tennis teams. The 3 p.m. Friday, April 13 meet will pit the unbeaten Washburn Ichabods and Lady Blues against SBU's Bearcats and Lady Bearcats.
"We would love to see a large crowd at the [Bryant Tennis Center] courts," said SBU Head Coach John Bryant. "This is a big conference meet for both our teams."
On the men's side, Washburn comes in with an unblemished 13-0 season record and a perfect 2-0 mark in the MIAA. The Ichabods are ranked 22nd in the nation in the latest NCAA Division II Intercollegiate Tennis Association Top 40 Poll. SBU (7-8 and 1-1) is ranked 36th.
Looking at the women's matchup, the unbeaten Lady Blues (13-0 and 4-0) are ranked 25th nationally while the Lady 'Cats are 10-7 and 2-3.
"This should be a competitive meet with four very talented teams," said Bryant. "It will be a great day of tennis."
In one of their most recent meets, the SBU men took on Drury (2nd), nationally-ranked, in an April 5 meeting in Springfield. The 'Cats got off to a good start by winning two of their three doubles matches. Junior Daniel Prerad and sophomore Emilio El Alabi fell in a close 6-8 loss to Drury's nationally-ranked doubles team of Stefan Borg and Nikola Prpic (6th). In the other two matches, however, freshman Alex Kacamakis teamed up with sophomore Agustin Mollar to knock off Drury's Ali Chaudry and Federico Levi 8-6. Sophomore Alan Mohadeb / freshman Micah AuBuchon also won their match, defeating Alexis Lluis / Jimmy Asp also winning 8-6.
Moving into their six singles matches, the 'Cats were unable to capitalize on the 2-1 advantage. The top singles match featured two nationally-ranked players, Kacamakis (22nd) and Borg (3rd) with Borg winning 6-4, 6-2. El Alabi fell 3-6, 3-6 to Chaudhry (25th) and Mollar lost 3-6, 3-6 to Levi (36th). Prerad, Mohadeb and AuBuchon would also fall in straight sets as Drury (11-2) prevailed in a 7-2 come-from-behind win.
