Locally composed music will be presented by the Southwest Baptist University Music Department at "The New Music Recital" April 24.
"The New Music Recital" will feature music composed by Dr. Renee Waters, coordinator of music theory / professor of music; Dr. Bill Hooper, professor emeritus of music, seniors Jonathon Antle and Chie Komamiya and sophomore Caleb McLaughlin.
McLaughlin was able to give insight and explain his piece.
This will be McLaughlin's second time for his music to be showcased at "The New Music Recital," last year he had music he wrote for his high school music theory class performed at the recital. This year, McLaughlin plans to showcase his development and growth in composing music since his attendance at SBU.
McLaughlin commented on his piece that will be performed this year, "It's called 'The Fields of Hyrule' and is inspired by 'The Legend of Zelda,' which I used to play when I was younger," said McLaughlin.
"The Legend of Zelda" is a role-playing video game from which McLaughlin finds much inspiration for his piece.
"The song is played by a String Quintet, and is lush and mysterious like the mythical land that exists only in the CDs and Cartridges of Nintendo's Zelda Games," said McLaughlin.
During the performance of "The Fields of Hyrule," a slide show of certain screen shots from the Zelda games will be displayed on a projections screen to aid in the effect McLaughlin is going for.
Among McLaughlin's piece, those written by the other composers are sure to be successful and worth while to listen.
"The New Music Recital" will take place April 24 at 7:30 in the Pike Auditorium.
