Residence Hall weather reaches uncomfortable lows

Issue date: 4/20/07 Section: News
Is it possible to turn the heat / air on and off more frequently to keep up with the changing Missouri weather?
"The problem is the procedure to do the change over from one season to the next. It is involved and we only have one person on staff to make the change. That is why we try to wait until the weather has changed with li change. It generally takes three days to make ht changeover. We have to wait until the water temperature is back to normal temperature (if heating, water has to decline from 150 degrees to 60 degrees, and if cooling, water rises from 40 degrees to 60 degrees). It is not an easy task for one person to do the changeover several times depending on what the weather is at that time."
Glidwell admits they may have jumped the gun on turning off the heat this year.
"I will say we probably did not make the right call the week before Easter," said Glidwell. "We should have changed over the systems earlier in the week. It is easy to second guess yourself in circumstances like this."
Despite the fact that what temperature you feel is what you get, the Office of Student Life still receives complaints.
"[We get complaints] when the weather erratically changes from being very warm this time of year to being very cold," said Amy Welch, director of Residence Life. "For example, we had snow last Saturday which is not typically weather this time of year and very low temperatures around Easter."
The Office of Student Life handles any parental and student complaints and directs them to Physical Plant Services.

I don't understand. In what dorms are people complaining? This is not presented in the article. I always thought the students in the dorms could adjust the temperatures in their rooms. (Continued…)
