Two other teams from SBU finished in the top 10 in the fifteen-team competition. The contest was held at the 13th Annual Consortium for Computing Sciences in Colleges-Central Plains Region (CCSC-CP) Programming Contest. A total of seven different universities were represented in the competition.
Additional teams from University of Central Missouri (2 teams), Drury University, Westminster College, College of the Ozarks and SBU competed but were unable to record a correct solution.
"The teams were all given five problems to solve in three hours," said Dr. Tim DeClue, Chair of the SBU Computer and Information Sciences Department. "When the contest was over, the A-team thought they had done really poorly because they had only solved two problems … then they found out they were the only group who had solved two and that they had won the competition. That made them feel a lot better. And that we had three teams in the top eight is pretty amazing. Even our team that didn't solve a problem was close - and they were missing one of their team-members. God has really blessed their hard work this year."
A-team members include junior Michael VanDevender (Nixa, Mo.), junior Nate Sisk (Sikeston, Mo.), and junior Adam Carney. B-Team members were senior Scott McFall (Topeka, Kan.), and junior Ben Brundage (Lucerne, Mo.). C-Team members were freshman Jacob Williams (Hume, Mo.), sophomore Steve Miller (Blue Springs, Mo.) and freshman Andrew Cook (Blue Springs, Mo.). D-Team members included junior Megan Burnett (Barnet, Vt.) and junior Rich Schoenrock (Waynesville, Mo.). The teams were coached by Jeff Kimball, James Cain, and DeClue.
