For the third consecutive year, The Omnibus, the student newspaper of Southwest Baptist University, captured the coveted sweepstakes award at the annual Missouri College Media Association (MCMA) Convention April 13-14 at The Lodge of Four Seasons in Lake Ozark. According to Omnibus Adviser Chris Keller, SBU was up for 40 awards, the most of any school in the state.
"This has truly been a special year," said Keller. "The sweepstakes three-peat, the 40 award nominations, hosting the MCMA Convention; our staff has a lot to be proud of."
Altogether, The Omnibus brought home 22 awards, including their third consecutive Division III sweepstakes championship which goes to the school that garners the highest number of award points. Bringing home six first place, two second place and seven third place awards - along with seven honorable mentions - The Omnibus accumulated 43 award points, finishing just ahead of second place Evangel (41) and third place Park (40). Other competing schools included Drury, William Jewell, Culver-Stockton, Stephens College and Fontbonne. A total of 29 schools competed for MCMA awards this year.
"In my five years as Omnibus Adviser, this was the toughest field we've ever competed in," said Keller. "There were lots of great entries."
In the Best Overall Newspaper category, The Omnibus received an honorable mention.
