Candles were then lit as Raise Your Voice president senior Ivry Karamitros and senior Karen Marker read the names of some of the victims at Virginia Tech and Bible verses. Some of the victims were freshmen, a graduate student and several professors of the University, including a Holocaust survivor.
"When [Karamitros] and [Marker] were listing the names of who was lost, it made me think of the potential we had lost," said Graham. "But it brought us together. Everyone is unified when something like this happens."
At the end of the list of victims the students, faculty and staff observed a moment of silence in memory of the victims. The service was closed by a prayer led by Professor of Biblical Studies Dr. Rodney Reeves.
The vigil was planned in less than 24 hours. Raise Your Voice enlisted the help of SGA, Dean of Students Rob Harris, Director of Safety and Security Mark Grabowski, the Bolivar Police Department and many others to get the vigil off the ground on such short notice.
"If it helped one person then it was worth it," said Jacobs.
"We really want this to encourage students to be involved in Raise Your Voice and other student organizations," said Karamitros.
"We're tired of apathy," added Graham. "[The turnout of students] showed us what our students can do when they get together."
