Qualifying for nationals is a big deal. Hundreds of track and field athletes attempt to qualify for nationals every year and only a minute percentage of those athletes are able to qualify in their specialty event. This is why it is so amazing to have an athlete who is a two-time All-American in the mile qualify for nationals in two events … neither of which is the 1,500 (outdoor track's equivalent to the mile).
Senior T. Jay Sanderson, fresh off of nationally-qualifying in the 5,000 meters, ran a provisional qualifying time of 9 minutes, 12.56 seconds in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. In only his third time ever running the steeplechase, Sanderson managed to break the school record by 27 seconds.
As well as Sanderson ran, he was not the only Southwest Baptist athlete to have a solid meet at the Papa John's Division II Challenge.
Headlining other performances by the men was sophomore Michael Pierce in the 1,500-meter run. Pierce ran a personal-best of 3 minutes, 57.7 seconds, which was good enough for third place.
Also clocking personal bests were sophomore Vince Tichenor and freshman Jesse Kueker in the 800-meter run. Tichenor crossed the line just under 1 minute, 58 seconds while Kueker broke the elusive two-minute barrier by timing 1:59.64.
In the 400-meter dash, freshman Jordan Rowe continued his pursuit of breaking the 50 seconds by finish in 50.57 seconds.
On the women's side, the freshmen Jennies led the way. In the 400-meter dash, Jenny Blair continued her assault on the record books by breaking SBU's record with a time of 57.16 seconds. In the 400-meter hurdles, Jennifer Gillespie broke her own school record by nearly two seconds on her way to a first-place finish.
In the women's 1,500-meter run, SBU had a strong showing, putting three runners in the top six. The Lady 'Cats were led by junior Alyssa Maggart who placed second with a time of 4:54.4. Following Maggart were freshmen Courtney Ayers (5th) and Andrea Owensby (6th).
In the 800-meter run, freshman Mallory Roth finished 4th with a time of 2:18.52. Roth's time was good for a personal best and puts her in solid contention for all-conference honors.
In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, freshman Chelsea Strahm knocked over five seconds off her previous best time by clocking 11 minutes, 37.27 seconds.
After a solid week of racing, the Bearcats will now head to Lawrence, Kan. to compete in the prestigious Kansas Relays.
