Unfortunately, the Spirit Squad program is no longer. However, in its place will be the new program called Kick Kats.
Following the tradition set by past Spirit Squads, Kick Kats will still be dedicated to inspiring school spirit to fans and players during basketball games.
The Kick Kats will hold open tryouts Friday, April 27 from 3-9 p.m. and Saturday, April 28 from 9 a.m. to noon. At 5 p.m. that evening, there will be a pizza bash to get to know all the new members of Kick Kats.
Requirements to be involved in Kick Kats include being enrolled and accepted to the University, a completed questionairre found on the University Web site, a steady 2.5 GPA, a commitment to three practices a week and a promise to engage in a physical fitness program to stay in peak performance condition.
Requirements to try out include a hip hop / cheer pom dance, a personally choreographed routine, demonstration of leaps and tumbling and a demonstration of a variety of dance.
Those wishing to try out must also learn the SBU fight song, perform the "purple and white" chant, must be able to do a toe touch jump and a second jump of the performer's choice.
Coaches for the Kick Kats will be juniors Holly Windham and Megan Jasper.
Any questions regarding tryouts or Kick Kats in general may be directed to Jasper at meganjanelle@msn.com or Windham at dhollygirl@yahoo.com.
