In doubles, the 'Cats captured one of three matches. Kacamakis / Mollar pulled out a 9-8 decision, El Alabi / Prerad fell 6-8 and freshman Micah AuBuchon / Mohadeb lost 4-8.
Played on the indoor courts of the Millennium Fitness and Tennis Center in Joplin, the SBU-Washburn meet was moved from the Bryant Tennis Center in Bolivar after a day-long rain storm forced the meet's relocation.
Following a 5-3 April 17 loss to nationally-ranked Northwood (19th) in Springfield, the 'Cats (9-10 overall and 2-1 in MIAA play) traveled to St. Joseph Friday, April 20 for a MIAA make-up meet with Truman State.
According to Bryant, an SBU victory over Truman, coupled with a Washburn win over nationally-ranked Northwest Missouri State (35th), would create a three-way tie for first place in the MIAA standings.
"If we have a tie, a coin flip would be used to determine the seeding for the MIAA Tournament," said Bryant. "If Northwest beats Washburn, then Northwest would get the top seed, we would be the number two seed and Washburn would be number three."
After their Friday meet with Truman, the 'Cats will stay in St. Joseph for the annual MIAA Tournament, which is set for Saturday and Sunday, April 21-22. SBU will be looking to capture its 14th MIAA title at this year's tournament.
In addition to playing for another conference title, the 'Cats will be looking to clinch a spot in the 64-team Division II National Tennis Championships (NTC).
With their season record at 9-10, the 'Cats would need to get at least two victories in their final three meets to qualify for the NTC.
According to the NCAA, teams with below .500 records are not allowed to compete in the NTC, even if they are nationally and regionally-ranked.
Speaking of regional rankings, the 'Cats are currently ranked first in the North Central Region, one of eight Division II regions nationwide. Should the 'Cats finish as either the first or second-ranked team in their region, they would then qualify to host a first round NTC regional meet at the Bryant Tennis Center. According to Bryant, the 'Cats control their own destiny.
"All we need to do is win," said Bryant. "It's up to us."
