Smith leads SBU golf to sixth place fininsh

It was sixth place finish in a six-team meet for the Southwest Baptist golf team.
Competing on a par-72 course at the Concordia Spring Invitational in Lake City, Minn., the Bearcats shot a two-day 331 team score that left them in sixth place, just two strokes behind fifth place host Concordia-St. Paul. Winona State won the meet with a 307 followed by Minnesota-Crookston (314) and Bemidji State (323) and Upper Iowa University (323).
Junior Garrett Smith had SBU's top individual score. Smith finished 12th in the overall player standings, shooting a team-best 36 on day one. Carding a 43 on day two, Garrett finished with a 79, three shots better than freshmen teammates Brad Nipper (82) and Justin Sellin (82). Junior Clay Brandenburgh (88) and Adam Lotz (90) rounded the 'Cats starting five.
Up next for SBU is the April 23-24 MIAA Tournament at the Branson Creek Golf Club in Hollister, an 18-hole par-71 course. The 'Cats currently occupy sixth place in the eight-team MIAA point standings. Washburn leads the standings with a team-best 32 points followed by Central Missouri (25), Missouri Southern State (23), Missouri Western State (22), Fort Hays State (13), SBU (12.5), Truman State (11) and Pittsburg State (5.5).
