Last week, the Southwest Baptist softball team had a set of game cancellations and postponements. The Lady 'Cats finally took the field Tuesday, April 17 when they hosted University of Central Missouri.
The Lady 'Cats started game one keeping the Jennies off the scoreboard until the very end of the game. Central Missouri was able to get runners on base in each inning. Then, in the sixth inning, the Jennies capitalized when junior Katie Bauer hit a home run over the right centerfield fence. After the home run, the Jennies got three hits and left three runners on base.
In the bottom of the seventh, SBU freshman Mackenzie Mortimer reached base on an error, but SBU was unable to bring her home. The Jennies ended up victorious over the Lady 'Cats 1-0.
The losing pitcher was senior Amanda Orchard, falling to 4 and 10 on the year. Orchard gave up nine hits, one earned run, six walks, and earning two strikeouts.
The second game of the double header was a different story. Central Missouri started the second game getting the lead off runner on base, and quickly put three runs on the board. In the second inning, the Jennies attacked again with more base runners. First freshman Amanda Daley got a hit and reached first, then Lauren Young walked to put two runners on for the Jennies. Next, two more Jennies came up and got hits, scoring four more runs in the inning. The Jennies were held off the board for two innings until the fifth, when Central scored two more runs off a home run by Ely-Myers. The Jennies won the second game 9-1.
The winning pitcher for the Jennies Freshman Lindsey Wagaman, improving to 10 and 3 for the season, going three complete innings, giving up one hit and one earned run, walking one with one strikeout. Taking the loss for SBU was freshman Jana Provance, falling to 1 and 8 on the year.
With the two losses, SBU falls to 5-24, 0-8 in the MIAA.
Wednesday, April 18, the Pittsburg State Gorillas came to town to make up last weeks postponement.
