In a week full of make-up games, Southwest Baptist baseball responded with two series splits and a wild come-from-behind win.
Tuesday's 12-11 win over Missouri Southern was nothing but ordinary for the Bearcats. Game one had seen the Bearcats being able to only scratch out one hit in a 4-0 loss. So, when SBU found itself up 10-3 heading into the top of the sixth, it was easy to assume the Bearcats had had their revenge. Southern did not think so.
An eight-run inning by the Lions put Southern up 11-10 heading into the bottom of the sixth in a seven inning game.
A single by senior Skyler Powers and two consecutive walks taken by freshman Andrew Rickman and sophomore Chris Capps loaded the bases for SBU with one out. But the Bearcats could not capitalize, and after a perfect inning from freshman Eric Wallace, SBU was down to its final three outs.
The bottom of the seventh started with a line out by junior Brad Mountjoy, but senior Chris Miller followed with a single to right to give the 'Cats a chance. Powers followed with a fly out to center to make junior Josh Baggett SBU's final hope.
He came through.
Baggett's RBI single scored Miller and SBU sent the game to extra innings.
After not being able to capitalize on having runners on second a third with two out in the eighth, the Bearcats did what they could to give themselves another opportunity in the ninth.
Powers' one-out walk, followed by a single by Baggett and a walk by Capps loaded the bases and gave Rickman a chance to end it. He did, with a single to left, allowing Powers to score.
The freshman's third hit of the day gave SBU its 14th win of the season. SBU (14-20) improved to 7-12 in the MIAA and will travel to Fort Hays State University for two doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday, April 20 and 21.
