Fundraising efforts for Southwest Baptist's 2007 Polk County Community Scholarship (PCCS) Campaign will include a telephone campaign and personal solicitation by SBU staff members.
The Campaign solicits gifts from county businesses and residents to provide a $1,500 annual scholarship for graduates of the six Polk County high schools (Bolivar, Fair Play, Halfway, Pleasant Hope, Morrisville and Humansville) who attend SBU.
The students will be awarded the scholarship annually if they maintain a 2.0 GPA during their four years at SBU. The scholarship fund was established in 1979, when 80 contributors provided $29,000. The 2007 goal is $100,000.
Theresa Daniels, director of the annual fund at SBU, is the coordinator for the PCCS fund-raising campaign.
"The people of Polk County are always ready to accept the challenge of providing scholarships for their students," said Daniels. "I am confident that Polk County citizens will step forward again this year to reach the $100,000 goal."
Daniels says PCCS will be increased this year from $1,100 to $1,500.
"The challenge for the partnership between the Polk County community and SBU is to build a significant base of support for our local students to encourage them to stay in our community during their college years and beyond," said Daniels. "It is also our hope to increase the endowment for these scholarships."
According to Daniels, the endowment currently has grown to more than $134,000.
Daniels says a significant number of PCCS recipients who completed their education at SBU continue to live in the Polk County area.
