Relay For Life heads into third straight year

Ian Paterson

Issue date: 4/27/07 Section: News
As of 2006, $14,994.81 has been donated to the American Cancer Society as a result of Relay For Life.
This year's Relay For Life will take place in the Blair Intramural Gym in the Meyer Wellness and Sports Center from 7 p.m. Friday, Apiril 27 until 7 a.m. Saturday, April 28.
Those familiar to Relay For Life should expect to see both familiar and unfamiliar things at this year's event.
"Relay is different from year to year," said Wynn. "It is never the same ... Our theme this year is an international theme, which is different from last year's 'Relay Through the Decades.' It's a different twist every year, and I think that's what makes Relay so interesting and inviting year after year."
On the docket for this year's Relay For Life is the standard survivor lap, in which cancer survivors take the first lap around the track to kick off the event. Also, music will be performed by graduate student Quintin Wilks, sophomore Ontario Whiteside, and senior Daryl Porter. Da Vine ministries will also hold a dance clinic.
Pizza and breakfast will be served free of cost as well as food for sale by Relay For Life teams in order to raise money for donations.
The cost to attend Relay For Life is $5 at the door for the entire 12-hour event. Extra cash is also recommended to those who plan to attend because many items will be sold by the Relay For Life teams in order to raise money to donate to the American Cancer Society.
"Relay For Life is much more than a walk around a track," said Shepard. "It is a time to remember those lost to cancer and celebrate those who have survived. It is a night for people who have shared the same experience to comfort and console one another. Relay gives you the power to help accelerate the American Cancer Society's progress toward a future where cancer doesn't take the lives of our friends and family."
