"If successful, the re-structuring of SGA will separate activities from government," said Towner.
Under the new structure, there will be an activities council, which will focus solely on planning activities. SGA will continue to serve on the governmental side of things. SGA will focus on student issues and concerns.
The two entities will both consist of four main positions.
The SGA Cabinet will be comprised of the student body president, vice president, secretary and treasurer. The Activities Council will be made up of four committee chair heads: Concerts, Major Events, Campus Activities and Publicity. As has been tradition, committees will be in place to help the chair heads, and within SGA, class officers will still be in place.
The April 11 SGA Cabinet elections brought about some more confusion among SBU students. Several students have expressed concerns on the new campus organization Raise Your Voice.
2007-2008 Student Body President senior Ivry Karamitros is also serving as president for Raise Your Voice, and some students are concerned that Karamitros is trying to merge the two organizations. Other students are just misinformed about SGA and Raise Your Voice and their functions.
"As far as I know, [Raise Your Voice is] a Facebook group," said sophomore Justin Vaughn.
Two students who feel more informed about the organization than Vaughn have differing views.
"[Raise Your Voice is] just a way to stir up trouble and for people to feel good about themselves because they care about the rights of others as opposed to the rest of us 'Christians' who just judge each other," said an anonymous student.
Another anonymous student has a different take on Raise Your Voice.
"Raise Your Voice actually does stuff for the environment when SGA won't," said the student. "They're trying to make people aware [of environmental issues]."
According to Karamitros, who started Raise Your Voice, the organization exists in order to facilitate the discussion of ideas and opinions facing our community, nation and world in a free and open environment. The organization will act upon these discussions with a service project targeted toward the Bolivar community and SBU campus.
