The Southwest Baptist softball team traveled to Maryville, Mo. on Friday, April 20 to take the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats (18-13 overall, 5-4 in MIAA). In the first game, the Lady 'Cats and Northwest were scoreless in a pitchers' duel until the top of the sixth when freshman Alisa Klingenberg reached base on an error, then advanced around the bases to score on an error by the Northwest left fielder.
An inability to score runs led to a four-game sweep by Fort Hays State over Southwest Baptist April 20-21. A Chris Capps RBI double and a Spencer Wilkins RBI single were the only runs scored in a 9-2 game one loss. Ray Kelly gave up seven runs, six earned, in four innings of work.
Close, but no cigar. It's a familiar story for the Southwest Baptist women's tennis team. After just missing the cut for last year's NCAA Division II Tennis Championships, the Lady Bearcats found themselves in an almost identical situation this year. Early this week, SBU Head Coach John Bryant had the unpleasant task of telling the team that they had just missed the making the national tournament, again.
Southwest Baptist junior Garrett Smith, from Clinton, Mo., was named MIAA Golf Athlete of the Week forhis team-leading efforts in two 18-hole meets hosted by Concordia-St. Paul April 16-17 in Lake City, Minnesota. In the Concordia Spring Invitational, held April 16, Smith finished in a tie for fifth in the individual player standings with a three-over par 74.
Southwest Baptist golf team at the MIAA Championship Tournament held April 22-23 in Hollister. With six players competing in the tournament, the Bearcats captured sixth place overall and finished sixth in the final MIAA point standings. In the overall tournament scoring, SBU registered a two-day, 930 team score.
Win, and you're in. That was the situation facing the Southwest Baptist men's tennis team at the MIAA Championships last week. In addition to competing for the MIAA title, the Bearcats were also playing for the right to participate in the NCAA Division II Tennis Championships next month.
