Golf 'Cats finish sixth in MIAA

Southwest Baptist golf team at the MIAA Championship Tournament held April 22-23 in Hollister. With six players competing in the tournament, the Bearcats captured sixth place overall and finished sixth in the final MIAA point standings.
In the overall tournament scoring, SBU registered a two-day, 930 team score. Played on the Branson Creek Golf Club's 18-hole, par-71 course, the tournament started with an 18-hole round and a nine-hole round on day one, followed by a nine-hole round and an 18-hole round on day two.
Washburn (872) won the team title with Central Missouri (901), Missouri Western State (913), Missouri Southern State (914), Truman State (922), SBU (930), Fort Hays State (942) and Pittsburg State (972) following.
In the individual player standings, SBU was led by freshman Justin Sellin who shot a 76 and 37 one the first day, and a 74 and 39 on the second. Sellin's 226 two-day total gave him an 11th place finish in the player standings. Washburn sophomore Matt Ewald (212) captured first place honors and was named the MIAA's Player of the Year.
Also competing for the 'Cats was freshman Brad Nipper (229), junior Clay Brandenburgh (232), sophomore Matt Hefley (251) and juniors Garrett Smith (254) and Jared Lotz (257).
In the MIAA regular season point standings, the 'Cats finished sixth with 18.5 team points, just a half-point behind fifth place Truman (19). Washburn (48) captured both the MIAA regular season and tournament championships with Central (39), Missouri Western (34), Missouri Southern (33), Truman (19), SBU (18.5), Fort Hays (17) and Pittsburg (7.5) following. MIAA teams were awarded points in five conference-sanctioned tournaments, including the MIAA Championship Tournament.
Starting the season with four juniors, two sophomores and four freshmen, Brandenburgh said he is excited about the possibilities for next year's team.
"We'll have everybody back next season," said Brandenburgh. "We will have both depth and experience. I'm looking forward to it."
