The Southwest Baptist softball team traveled to Maryville, Mo. on Friday, April 20 to take the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats (18-13 overall, 5-4 in MIAA).
In the first game, the Lady 'Cats and Northwest were scoreless in a pitchers' duel until the top of the sixth when freshman Alisa Klingenberg reached base on an error, then advanced around the bases to score on an error by the Northwest left fielder. Klingenberg scored the only run of the game.
In the first game, the winning pitcher was senior Amanda Orchard who went seven innings, giving up no runs on five hits, and struck out five.
The second game against Northwest was like night and day compared with game one. SBU was only able to get four hits the entire game. However, the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats started the second game with hot bats, putting 9 runs on the board in the first inning.
Then, in the second inning, Northwest scored five more runs. Northwest added two more in the fouth inning, putting the score at 16 to 0. The game ended after 6 innings.
Taking the loss for the Lady 'Cats was Orchard, who falls to 5-12 on the season.
Saturday, April 21, SBU continued their road trip by heading to St. Joseph to take on the Missouri Western Griffons (23-17, 7-4 MIAA).
In the first game, SBU was held scoreless in the first two innings. In the third inning, freshman McKenzie Mortimer walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch, stole third and eventually scored on an error. In the fourth inning, the Lady 'Cats were able to add two more runs. SBU scored one more run in the top of the sixth to put them up on the Griffons 4-0. In the seventh inning, Missouri Western finally put a run on the board, but were unable to rally, and fell to SBU 4-1.
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Lady 'Cats were held scoreless and only managed two hits for the game.
The Griffons scored two runs in the first inning and were held scoreless the remainder of the game.
After the split with Missouri Western, the Lady 'Cats record stands at 7-28 overal and 2-12 in the MIAA.
Continuing on the road, SBU traveled to Joplin Monday, April 23 to play the Missouri Southern Lions (12-27, 3-10 MIAA).
In game one, Southern scored a single run in the first, second and fifth innings. The Lady 'Cats were held scoreless until the sixth when Mortimer scored on a single by Klingenberg.
The losing pitcher for SBU was Orchard, who falls to 5 -13 on the season.
In game two, SBU was shut out and was only able to get four hits.
Missouri Southern scored one run in the second inning and four in the third.
The final score was 5-0 in favor of Missouri Southern. SBU had three errors in the game, while Missouri Southern had one.
Freshman Jana Provance took the loss for the Lady 'Cats, pitching three complete innings, giving up five runs, two earned, on six hits.
SBU's record now stands at 7-30 on the season and 2-14 in the MIAA.
