An inability to score runs led to a four-game sweep by Fort Hays State over Southwest Baptist April 20-21.
A Chris Capps RBI double and a Spencer Wilkins RBI single were the only runs scored in a 9-2 game one loss. Ray Kelly gave up seven runs, six earned, in four innings of work. The loss brought his record down to 3-4 this season.
SBU was shut out in a 1-0 pitcher duel in game two. Zane Montgomery pitched his best game of the season, giving up the lone run and striking out eight in eight innings of work. Unfortunately, the Bearcat offense could only muster up four hits, two from Brad Mountjoy and two from Skyler Powers, in support of Montgomery. Montgomery's record fell to 3-7 on the season while lowering his earned run average to 5.01.
Day two was not much better for the Bearcats, losing both games by a combined total of 17-3.
Josh Baggett was responsible for the only run in game three. He scored in the fifth inning when Andrew Rickman grounded into a double play. One bright spot was a strong relief appearance from Nick Henderson who went three-and-one third innings without giving up a run while scattering four hits.
Game three starter J.R. Smith, who lasted only two-and-one third innings, fell to 1-4.
John Cobb and Baggett each drove in runs in their game four 6-2 loss. Wilkins had three hits and a run scored in the contest. Starter James Ledford (2-6) went six strong innings, giving up four earned runs and striking out four.
The Bearcats are scheduled to play two double-headers against Missouri Western on April 27-28 and will have a make-up game Monday, April 30 against Emporia State at 2 p.m. Game one versus MWSU on Friday starts at 2 p.m. and noon on Saturday. All games are in Bolivar.
