Southwest Baptist University students may have noticed new faces and a sudden influx of parents wandering around campus lately.
Students can expect to see more until finals week as the incoming freshman class begins to enroll in their first semester of college courses.
Incoming student enrollment began April 26 and 27 and will continue through May 11.
Each student goes through an orientation in which they meet some faculty and staff who give the new students and parents some idea of what to expect from college life, academic and social.
The new students are then able to register for classes with their new advisors in the University Success Center. The new students are also able to have their first meal in Mellers Dining Commons as Bearcats.
Incoming freshman Emily Bell from Centerton, Ark. registered for classes April 26. The visit fueled Bell's excitement for college.
Bell was home schooled for the majority of her academic life, except for attending a private Christian school for 4th through 7th grades. When Bell was making her decision for college, she knew she wanted to continue in Christian education.
"I always wanted to go to a Christian college," said Bell.
Bell, a prospective Intercultural Studies major, was drawn to SBU largely because of its missions program.
In recent years Bell has felt a tug on her heart for missions work, but says she was waiting on God for direction.
"On my first visit [to SBU], I had no idea what my degree would be," said Bell. "When I opened my [visitor's] packet, ICS was right there, and I saw a concentration for ESL."
Bell has already had a lot of experience teaching English as a second language, going with her parents on a mission trip to Ukraine to do ESL work. Finding this degree at SBU seemed to be an open door for Bell to fulfill God's call on her life.
While Bell does not know if she will be a full-time missionary, she believes that by going to SBU she is on the right track.
