Southwest Baptist baseball snapped a 10-game losing streak with a 12-2 demolishing of Pittsburg State in game two of a doubleheader Tuesday.
A six run inning by the Bearcats in the fourth was more than enough to support a dominant junior Zane Montgomery.
Montgomery, who pitched all seven innings before the game was called due to the run spread rule, struck out four and was charged with only one of the two runs he allowed. His record improved to 4-8 on the season.
A double was apart of a threehit, three RBI day for senior Kevin Miller. Three other Bearcats had multiple hits, including sophomore Jason Asher who singled three times, scored once and drove in a run. Senior Skyler Powers added a solo home run in the Bearcats six-run third inning.
Game two was a refreshing experience in comparison to game one. PSU (23-26 / 14-16) won game one 15-7 on the strength of a six run fourth and a five-run seventh inning. Junior Josh Baggett and senior Spencer Wilkins each had three hits and drove in three runs in the loss. Junior Chris Martinez scored three times and doubled for the Bearcats.
Sophomore Ray Kelly gave up eight runs on seven hits before being taken out in the third inning. The loss lowered Kelly's record to 3-6.
The split improved SBU's record to 8-22 in the MIAA and 15-30 overall.
The Bearcats will complete their season this weekend versus Washburn Friday and Saturday. Both days will featured doubleheaders with Friday's games starting at 1 p.m. and Saturday's at noon.
Washburn enters the series with a 14-18 record in conference and a 20-25 overall record. The Ichabods have won three of their last four including a two-game sweep of Emporia State.
