Softball team ends disappointing season on a win

The Southwest Baptist University softball team returned home to begin their second to last series of the season last week. After falling twice to Missouri Southern State in Joplin last week, it was SBU's turn to host MSSU in an April 25 doubleheader in Bolivar.
In game one, both teams were held scoreless through the first four innings. SBU was able to get three hits in the four innings, but was unable to capitalize on the opportunities with runners on base. In the fifth inning, the Lions' bats came to life with a seven-run inning.
In the top of the seventh, the Lions put four more runs on the board to give Missouri Southern an 11-0 win.
The losing pitcher for SBU was senior Amanda Orchard who threw 4 2/3 innings, giving up seven runs.
In game two, the Lady 'Cats were able to get the bats working quickly, putting one run on the board in the first and two more in the second.
Southern took a four-run lead in the top of the seventh when they put four more runs on the board. Missouri Southern managed to hold off SBU 6-4.
After the series, the Lady 'Cats fell to 7-32 on the season and 2-16 in the MIAA. Missouri Southern improved to 15-27, 6-10 in the MIAA.
To finish out the season, the Lady 'Cats took on the Hawks from Rockhurst for Senior Day.
The game was a pitchers duel with both teams only able to get a few runners on base. The score remained tied at zero and went into extra innings. In the top of the ninth, Rockhurst put up the first and only run of the game to win 1-0.
The losing pitcher for SBU was Orchard, who fell to 6-17 on the season. Orchard pitched a complete game, going nine innings, giving up one run, six hits, and striking out four.
In the final game of the season, the 'Cats were able to get on the board in the first inning. In the third, Rockhurst took the lead 2-1, but was shut out for the remainder of the game.
SBU rallied in the fifth inning, scoring five and taking the lead. The Lady 'Cats were lead by freshman McKenzie Mortimer who had four hits and scored twice. Also contributing for SBU was senior Tara Phillips, who had two hits and scored one run in her final game.
Taking the victory for the Lady 'Cats was Mortimer, her first of the season. Mortimer went six innings, giving up two runs and four hits while striking out one.
The Lady 'Cats finished the season with a recorded of 8-35 overall and 2-16 in conference play.
