Since this was an open meet, athletes could compete unattached and a couple of the SBU coaches took this opportunity to show their stuff. Assistant Coach Jason Goff, a former Olympic Junior National Champion and decathlete at Stanford University, participated in the javelin and discus, Graduate Assistant Quinton Wilks took part in the long jump and Volunteer Assistant Corey McElhaney ran the 5,000-meter run. Goff won the javelin throw by almost 40 feet and came away victorious in the discus throw as well. Wilks placed sixth in the long jump and McElhaney, competing in his first ever 5,000-meter run in track, placed fourth.
Senior T. Jay Sanderson traveled to Michigan to take part in a very competitive meet. Racing the 3,000-meter steeplechase, the event he intends on running at nationals, Sanderson further lowered the school record by clocking 9:05.91. This time ranks Sanderson fifth in the nation with only conference and last-chance meets remaining. His time also puts him only 16 seconds off of the Olympic "B" Standard for the steeplechase.
The 2007 season marks the first year that Sanderson has really focused on this event. Previously in his career, he has only raced in the steeplechase five times.
With the regular season finished, the Bearcats now look towards the MIAA Championships May 5-6 in Hays, Kansas.
