The bold experimentation applies to our SGA; we recognize the way it works now as failing. The system must be tweaked by dividing student government and activities to get more students involved, thereby concentrating more in depth on these areas.
Karamitros is leading us bravely in that direction; she has a passion for student safety improvements from a ubiquitous campus intercom system to an alarm system against predators on campus. She also sees the need for more community involvement.
"Our Student Government Association should act as a liaison to our community," said Karamitros. "Students need to be more involved in the decisions being made in our local government and do more in our community to gain respect from other citizens who reside in Bolivar."
Karamitros cites her own personal experience working with a Bolivar company and suffered a scolding from her co-workers regarding SBU students just coming to Bolivar to use the city and not giving back.
It is true that Southwest Baptist University needs to be greater servants in our area. Too often we look to foreign lands and big cities to offer our help, but someone needs to help the people in Bolivar and reach out to them. Karamitros assigned representatives to committees to ensure that we have both improved campus security and community involvement.
For the first time in years, SGA is researching focusing on issues through committees to achieve goals instead of just talking about issues during meetings. The 2007-2008 Student Government Association will be more productive than ever with everyone hoping for a revival in student life that will indelibly impact our campus.
