With the school year ending, most students are either cramming for finals or simply relaxing. But, for our Student Government Association, now is the time to make plans for next year.
They view the coming year as critical to revive student life at Southwest Baptist University. As a result, there will be two separate branches: one for student activities and one for student government. This will allow for greater focus on each duty.
After attending the meetings for the last two weeks under the new leadership of Student Body President Ivry Karamitros, much enthusiasm and many new ideas have been proclaimed in the areas of student safety and student involvement in the community.
Karamitros commandeers her meetings with both eloquence and forcefulness to get her agenda across. The problem now comes to the forefront that some students are either confused or disagree with the new direction being taken for next year.
From this point on, I will clarify the reasons for SGA re-structuring and the necessity for students to have greater involvement in the Bolivar community.
A major gripe SGA representatives have is their uneasiness for the new re-structuring program. To those who want to try to make our old system work with just student government, I would say that by taking that action, we are being dishonest.
There was very little student governing that went on this past year because our main focus was on student activities. The organization would have to be rightly called "Student Activities." So, if things were left as is, we would only have Student Activities.
A re-structuring is necessary for the entire organization because student life is dead, and we cannot keep practicing our student affairs in a way that has little focus on a student government that fails the school in terms of little student participation and lackluster student life.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt said in the midst of the great depression, "This country needs and, unless I mistake its temper, the country demands bold, persistent experimentation. It is common sense to take a method and try it. If it fails, admit it frankly and try another. But above all, try something."
