"The strangest thing happened," noted Faseler. "My own songs were stuck in my head, and I've never had that happen. It really, for the first time, felt like I was listening to some other band, and I wasn't just listening to us make really crappy noise."
"One of the songs is called 'Party Girl Hallelujah,' and it was a really cool feeling because it's a song that I wrote personally," said Joe. "I remember a year ago, like last July, I was sitting in my room in Kansas City, and I wrote the song and recorded it on my own. So it was kind of a cool feeling whenever we went into the studio. I was able to do it with a full band, and everybody had their own parts. I don't know; it was a neat feeling."
Along with the excitement of first-time studio recording, there were some things the band did not figure would be a problem.
"The hardest thing about the whole thing was [that] we played a concert the night before we went to go record," said Faseler. "We stayed up really late the night before, just talking about what happened and talking about what we would do [the next day].
"By the time we got to the recording studio, we were talking and stuff, and my voice was killing me. I didn't know how I was going to be able to record … So, Zach [Henderson]'s aunt owns a coffee shop, and I walked into that coffee shop and got, like, half a gallon of hot tea and an ungodly amount of honey."
"He put, like, 20 honey sticks in it," added John.
"I was gargling tea and honey forever," continued Faseler. "So by the time I actually recorded, my voice sounded pretty good. Like, it kind of had that [raspy quality] that we were kind of looking for in the first place, but it still hurt. So, by the time we recorded the last thing, I pretty much lost it all. It sounded really good.
"I was really worried that my voice wouldn't hold out, but it did, and I was really pleased."
The band was able to hear a rough cut of the four-song demo before leaving Warsaw, and each had their own reaction to what they heard.
"It was really funny seeing everyone's reactions listening to it when we were there," said Zach. "There was just a lot of different reactions to different stuff."
"I'm really crazy excited," added Joe. "I can't wait to get it."
"I think it's going to sound pretty good," noted John. "He sent it out in the mail [Wednesday, May 9]. We'll probably get it [sometime this weekend]."
The band is continuing to fine tune their live show and hopes the mastered copy of the demo will reflect the same energy fans see at a John Holiday concert.
When the demo is completed, it will be posted at www.myspace.com/johnholidayband.
