Goodson Student Union became a game show arena as Southwest Baptist University students, faculty and staff battled it out at the fourth annual Alumni Association Trivia Extravaganza Tuesday, March 8.
Ten teams competed in 10 rounds, answering questions in one of 10 categories of literature, history, sports, movies, current events, potpourri (miscellaneous), music, science, SBU and the Bible.
Each team received a printout of all questions for the round face down on their table. At the start of each round, the team flipped the paper over and scrambled to answer all of the questions within the five minutes allowed. At the ring of the bell, the teams' answers were submitted to the judges: National Alumni Association board members Norma Bishop, Sherry Shoemaker and Debbie McClurg. Contest moderator and Director of Church and Alumni Relations Shawn Summers read the answers.
The points were tallied, and in the end, team The Cup Runneth Over won, beating The Winning Team.
"It was such a close match," said sophomore Jared Kathcart, member of The Cup Runneth Over. "It's relieving to come out on top."
Kathcart celebrated with fellow teammates sophomore Ian Nix, juniors Matt Jacobs and Brandon Winkler and Housing Coordinator Chris Keller. The Cup Runneth Over is the reigning champion of the Trivia Extravaganza, beating The Winning Team last year by only two points.
Each team was made up of four students, and each team had the option of adding one member of the faculty, staff, administration or SBU alum to their team. This year, aside from The Cup Runneth Over, only two teams took advantage of that option.
Winning third place with The Amaysings was Michael Mays, instructor of voice, and Professor of History Dr. James Smith came in second with The Winning Team.
Each team member of the first, second and third place teams won plastic coolers filled with gift certificates donated by local businesses. Gift certificates were from Pizza Hut, Fox's Pizza Den, Domino's, B & B Theaters and Cody's Convenient Store. The SBU Bookstore also donated t-shirts to each prize package.
