The new front desk of Jim Mellers Center, home to The Courts Redford College of Theology and Christian Ministry, looks much different than most remember. JMC will be open to SBU faculty in June. The building, formerly a conference center, has been undergoing renovation over the past eight months to better serve the academic needs of students. The project was funded by donors and money raised by the University.

Renovations on the Jim Mellers Center are scheduled to be completed in June.
According to Dr. Rodney Reeves, dean of the Courts Redford College of Theology and Christian Ministry, faculty will begin moving into the building at the beginning of June, and the first use of the building will be by students in the fall semester.
The new building, decorated in earth tones and dark purples, will be home to all church vocation programs, as well as the Intercultural Studies and In-Service programs.
New features of the renovated building include 15 faculty offices, all located on the main floor, a student lounge and larger, more efficient classrooms with up-to-date technology. Office lobbies will have seating and study desks. Also renovated was the building's heating and cooling system.
Construction on JMC began in November 2006 and continued non-stop, except for a short delay following the ice storm. The project is almost completed, with the exception of furniture and a few tiles.
A special feature in JMC is a "bunker" on the first floor.
The bunker can withstand the forces of tornadoes and earthquakes.
Though the building was already equipped with Wi-Fi and drop-down screens, the classrooms will also be equipped with SMART technology. Two classrooms will have new brand new SMART pad technology.
"[The new building] enhances the faculty's ability to use technology," said Taylor. "All of the faculty's offices are together so they can better share information and have fellowship with each other."
SBU's Information Technology Department will house backup servers in this room so that, in case of natural disaster, valuable information will not be lost.
