Southwest Baptist University's missions office received the Courts Redford Award for Excellence in Student Missionary Deployment during missions commission Chapel May 7.
The award, given by the North American Mission Board (NAMB), is presented to mission agencies that excel in student deployment. SBU was recognized as having a great number of students who have been a part of short-term mission work in North America. This includes those who participate in the University's organized teams, serve as NAMB summer missionaries and serve with the Missouri Baptist Convention.
"We are grateful to be recognized in this manner by the (NAMB)," said Diana Gallamore, director of University Missions. "SBU has been mobilizing students for many years, yet we feel that an atmosphere of missions is stronger than ever on this campus, which is evidenced by the number of students responding to missionary endeavors."
The award is named after Courts Redford, a former president of Southwest Baptist College. In the summer of 1944, Redford mobilized more than 70 students throughout the country through the Home Mission Board. Redford served the Home Mission Board for 21 years (1943-1964), the last 10 years as chief executive officer.
The University named the College of Christian Ministry and Theology after Redford in 1973.
According to the NAMB web site, Redford "recognized the value and impact students could have in evangelism and church planting."
The award was presented to Gallamore, Kelly Rehm, assistant director of University Missions, and Kurt Caddy, director of University Ministries, by Darren Tipton, a representative of NAMB.
Following the presentation, Tipton challenged attendees to be involved in missions.
The chapel service was also a commissioning service for SBU's summer mission teams and a time to present three Jack and Edith Fellows Christian Service Awards.
Last year, NAMB recognized SBU as a Top 10 Student Missionary Sending School and the University ranked first of 10 among Christian colleges in the nation.
"This award belongs to the student missionaries who are simply responding to God's leading them to share the gospel and minister to others in a variety of ways," said Gallamore.
